Getting Your Plates
6 questionsHow quickly will I get my plates?
Every plate is pressed to order in our London workshop. Orders placed before 1pm on a working day are dispatched the same day; anything after that goes out the next working day.
If you would rather not wait for the post, choose collection and pick them up from the shop the same day.
Can I collect from your shop instead of paying for delivery?
Yes. Order online and collect from 186 York Way, above Rayz Barbers, London N7 9AT — usually the same day.
Give us a ring on 0203 355 9577 before you set off so we can confirm your plates are pressed and waiting. Bring your ID and V5C with you if the plates are road legal.
Can you make plates while I wait?
In most cases, yes. Walk in with your documents and we will make your plates there and then — it usually takes a few minutes per plate.
It is worth phoning ahead at busy times so you are not standing about.
Where do you deliver to?
We post plates across the UK mainland as standard.
For Northern Ireland, the Scottish Highlands, the islands or anywhere outside the UK, ring us on 0203 355 9577 before you order and we will confirm the cost and the timings first.
Can I order just one plate?
Yes. In the builder, tick Not required above the front or the rear plate and you will only be charged for the one you keep. Handy if you have scuffed a single plate or you are replacing a front plate on a van.
Can I change or cancel my order after placing it?
Ring or WhatsApp us as soon as you can. If the plates have not gone into production we can change the registration, style or delivery address without any fuss.
Once a plate has been pressed it cannot be changed, because it carries your registration and cannot be sold to anyone else.
Road Legal & Show Plates
6 questionsAre your plates road legal?
Yes. Plates ordered as road legal are made to the DVLA specification and carry the British Standard mark BS AU 145e along with our supplier name and postcode, exactly as the law requires.
Show plates are a different thing: they are for off-road, display and show use only, and are not legal on a public road.
What documents do I need to order road legal plates?
By law a registered supplier has to see proof of who you are and proof that you are entitled to use the registration. In practice that means:
- Photo ID — a driving licence or passport
- Proof of entitlement — your V5C logbook, a new keeper slip, or a retention or certificate of entitlement document
Bring them with you if you are collecting, or we will ask for them after you order online. Show plates do not require any documents.
What is printed along the bottom of the plate?
Every road legal plate carries the British Standard number and the name and postcode of the supplier who made it. On ours that reads PLATECENTRAL and N7 9AT, next to BS AU 145e.
It is a legal requirement, not an advert — a plate without it will fail an MOT.
Can I space the characters however I like?
On road legal plates, no. The character spacing and the group spacing are fixed by the DVLA, and the builder applies the correct layout automatically as you type.
If you want your own spacing, switch the builder over to show plates — but remember those cannot be used on the road.
Will a 4D or 3D gel plate pass an MOT?
Yes, as long as it is ordered as a road legal plate. 4D and 3D gel change how the characters are formed, not the font, the size or the spacing, and the plate still carries the British Standard mark.
What fails an MOT is the wrong font, non-standard spacing, tinted or coloured backgrounds, and missing supplier details — none of which apply to a road legal plate from us.
Can I order plates for a private or personalised registration?
Yes, provided the registration is already assigned to you or to your vehicle. Bring the retention document (V778), the certificate of entitlement (V750) or the V5C showing the registration, together with your photo ID.
We cannot make road legal plates for a registration you have not yet had assigned.
Building Your Plate
7 questionsWhat is the difference between standard, 4D and 3D gel?
Standard lettering is flat printed to the DVLA specification — the classic look, and included in the plate price.
4D acrylic uses laser cut acrylic letters bonded on top of the plate, giving a sharp raised edge that catches the light. +£13.00 per plate.
3D gel is a domed resin over each character for a softer, rounded finish with real depth. +£13.00 per plate.
Which plate size do I need?
Most UK cars take the standard oblong, 520mm x 111mm — £12.49. If your bumper recess is smaller, or you want a different shape, you also have:
- 520mm Lambo style, angled ends — £16.99
- 457mm Lambo style, the same shape but shorter — £16.99
- 406mm short style, for tight apertures — £12.49. Fits up to 6 characters, so a full 7-character registration will not go on one
Measure the space on your car before you order. Front and rear are chosen separately in the builder, so you can run a standard front and a short rear if that is what fits.
Is the black border really free?
Yes. A black border is normally a £3.00 add-on and we include it at no cost on every plate that can take one. Pick it in step 4 of the builder and the price will not move.
Can I have a border and a side badge together?
On the standard 520mm oblong, yes — that shape takes both.
The Lambo shapes cannot take a border or a side badge because of the angled ends, and the 406mm short plate has room for a border but not a badge. The builder greys out anything that will not fit as soon as you choose your sizes, so you cannot order an impossible combination by accident.
Which country badges do you offer?
UK, ENG, CYM and SCO, all finished in raised 3D gel rather than a flat print, at £3.00 per plate.
Since September 2021 the UK badge is the one to use if you drive abroad; the old GB badge is no longer valid on its own.
Does the preview show exactly what I will receive?
Yes. The live preview in the builder updates as you choose your size, style, border and badge, and the price underneath moves with it — so there are no surprises at the basket.
On a road legal plate the preview also shows the supplier line and the British Standard mark exactly where they will be pressed.
Do you make plates for motorbikes, trailers or imports?
The builder covers the four standard car shapes. For motorcycle plates, trailer plates, oblong imports or anything else out of the ordinary, ring us on 0203 355 9577 or drop into the shop and we will sort it for you.
Once They Arrive
5 questionsDo you fit the plates for me?
We do not fit plates, but almost everyone fits their own. Add the adhesive kit for £2.00 and the plates stick straight onto the existing mounts — no drilling and no number plate screws needed.
How do I fit them with the adhesive kit?
Take the old plates off, then clean and dry the surface properly — any wax or road film and the pads will not hold.
Peel the backing, position the plate carefully before it touches, then press firmly along the whole plate for around 30 seconds. Fit above 10°C if you can, and leave the car dry for a couple of hours afterwards.
Can I put them through a car wash or jet wash them?
An automatic wash is fine. With a pressure washer, keep the lance back and off the edges of the characters — 4D and 3D gel letters are bonded to the surface, and a jet held close can lift them.
Warm soapy water and a soft cloth is all a plate really needs. Avoid solvents and abrasive polishes.
How long will the plates last?
Our plates are made from road legal acrylic to BS AU 145e and are built to last the life of the car. The reflective face is UV stable, so it will not yellow or fade in normal use.
Can I swap the plates onto another car?
Only if the registration is moving with them. Plates carry the registration assigned to a vehicle, so if you transfer a private registration to a different car the plates can move too — otherwise you will need a new set for the new registration.
If Something Is Not Right
5 questionsWhat payment methods do you accept?
All the usual debit and credit cards online, plus the express wallets your browser offers at checkout. In the shop we take card and cash.
Can I return plates if I change my mind?
Number plates are made to order with your registration on them, so they are personalised goods and cannot be resold. That means we cannot offer a change-of-mind return once a plate has been pressed.
Your legal rights are unaffected if the plates arrive faulty, damaged or not as ordered — see below.
My plates arrived damaged or wrong. What now?
Get in touch within 48 hours of delivery with a couple of photos and your order number, and we will remake and resend them at no cost.
Ring 0203 355 9577 or send the photos over WhatsApp — that is usually the quickest way to get it sorted.
I typed my registration wrong. Can you remake them?
Tell us straight away. If the plates have not been pressed yet we will simply correct the registration.
If they have already been made we will have to charge for a new set, since a plate with the wrong registration cannot be reused — but ring us anyway and we will do what we can.
Do you do trade or bulk pricing?
We supply garages, dealers and bodyshops across London. Ring 0203 355 9577 or come into the shop to talk about trade rates and regular accounts.
